I am the Programme Manager of the Plastic Bag Diet campaign at Greeneration Indonesia (GI), a social-enterprise offering green products and programmes to create a “green attitude and green environment”. My E-idea project is an extension of a campaign I began recently in cooperation with Circle K. Some 360 convenience stores across Indonesia agreed to replace plastic bags with Greeneration’s “BaGoes” — a bag said to be strong enough to carry a full load of groceries more than 1,000 times. In just six months, between October 2010 and March 2011, this project helped Circle K reduce by 2.7 million the number plastic bags used.

I believe that to create a green environment all we need is the right attitude: an eco-lifestyle attidute. We need creative campaigns such as the Plastic Bag Diet — an integrated campaign concept including a product and a programme — to improve environmental awareness among our communities.

Plastic bags have become one of the main enemies in the fight to clean the environment. Scientists have estimated that worldwide between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year. That’s about 1 million bags a minute. Although a single plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to degrade, people continue to discard 90 percent of the plastic bag they accumulate from shopping. According to the BBC, less than 3 percent of plastic bags wind up being recycled. Greeneration’s own research in five major Indonesian cities revealed that the average person uses around 700 plastic bags a year. A typical large retail outlet spends about Rp 88 million per shop per month to purchase “biogradable” plastic bags. My expanded project will include the development of a website, dietkantongplastik.com, to share success stories and best practices, and to expand our “fun theory” campaign across Indonesia. I also plan to replicate the successful bag-replacement programme at other outlets- a project involving five Centro Department Stores is currently in progress- and to engage government agencies and communities to become part of our movement. I studied biology at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) with a specialization in plant bio-engineering, and I am confident that I can use my scientific background to make this project a success. I have spent many years as researcher and a community leader before joining GI. The project also benefits from funding derived from the sale of 40,000 BaGoes bags, consultancy fees and donations.

I feel so honoured and excited to be part of E-idea. I hope my team project can be implemented on a bigger scale with support from all stakeholders. Our project is clearly something that can be implemented, and will have a big impact on the sustainability of our environment.
